As I have said, the purpose of my book is to get clear picture of what a Bigfoot is if it exists. Figuring out its habitat, diet, behavior, and appearance and then developing a profile. Skeptics and believers alike have their ideas, so I’ve decided to run through some of the prime suspects in the Sasquatch mystery. Here is a brief overview of each of the ones that currently interest me most.
I am not including any of the more paranormal explanations of the phenomena. I am only looking at examples that follow the widely accepted laws of biology and physics. This isn’t a knock on anyone or any theory. It’s simply what I would like to cover right now, and what I am most prepared to discuss.
This is just a quick overview, so some details will not be included. Later posts will review each one in more detail.
Suspect #1: Bears
At first this seems the most plausible. We know bears exist, they live in the same area most Bigfoot sightings happen (don’t they?), and they have a lot of the same characteristics. There have even been studies done. See my previous post for more detail on that here.

Suspect #2: Undiscovered Primate
Most Bigfoot enthusiasts fall into this camp. They are said to be bi-pedal and resemble apes. So it would make sense that this is an undiscovered primate species. We also have some examples of such a creature in the fossil record.

Suspect #3: Relict Member of the Genus Homo
Many Sasquatch encounters cite an intelligence beyond most ape species. They seem to be able to avoid detection in a way most animals cannot. Maybe the best argument for Bigfoot being a species of human is the fact that we have actually found uncontacted peoples in the world numerous times. Granted, they are all genetically homo sapiens, but isn’t it possible that another, older species persists? A human species that did not create clothing and advanced shelter building might sport more hair and the increased size could be attributed to the difference in genetics. Some reports – like the famous Sierra Sounds – claim Sasquatches have at least a proto-language.

Suspect #4: Human Hoaxes
Some of the reports are hoaxes. Of course they are. But as an explanation for the entire phenomenon? Doubtful. Some of these sightings are in incredibly remote areas. Also, some of the evidence like footprint casts are simply too complex to be faked.

What do you think?
Let me know in the comments what you think. Are there other suspects that should be listed? What do you think about the ones that I have listed? I will be doing posts in greater detail for each in the near future. Thanks for you input!
